Welcome to the Laura Rennie Interiors website! I am THRILLED this day is finally here! Virtual dance party, anyone?
My heart is beating out of my chest as I write this post. My dream of being an interior decorator goes further back than you may think, and I still can’t quite believe this is all happening.
I’m about to go deep — stick with me!
The past two years of my life have not been easy. My husband and I lost a baby boy at 34 weeks the summer of 2013 and a baby girl at 21 weeks last summer. After losing two children I had hoped and prayed for, I felt I had lost the ability to dream. It hurt too much. Twice I thought my dream of being a mother was coming true, and twice those dreams were dashed.
For a long period of time I stubbornly refused to let myself dream. Thinking about the future filled me with dread instead of joy. I hated that. I have always been a dreamer — a girl full of passions and excitement for life. I missed that girl.
Last spring I took a hard look at my life. I was tired of being crippled by grief. I was tired of being someone I didn’t recognize. I brought back to mind some of the things I’ve imagined for my life, things that didn't hurt to think about - the way it hurts to dream about being a mother. I thought about how much joy decorating brings me. I remembered the hours I spent in middle school designing floor plans with my 3-D home design software. I remembered the summer before college when I went back and forth on whether to major in Interior Design or Media Arts and Design. I remembered the way my heart fills up with pleasure when I’m able to help a friend make a decorating choice.
“Laura Rennie Interiors” was a pipe dream. Until suddenly, it wasn’t! Through a lot of tears and prayers I placed my dream in God’s hands and decided I’m going for this!
I have always had a passion for design and decorating, but I kicked things into high gear when I decided to turn my hobby into a business. I immersed myself into learning more about the field of interior design and decor. I checked out book after book from the library, took an interior design course through our local community college and signed up for various decorating webinars. Then, out of the blue, I received an e-mail from a friend I loosely keep in touch with. She asked if I would be willing to help her with a few rooms in her house, and she offered to pay me. I burst into tears. I had my first paying client, and I hadn’t even announced my business yet!
Starting Laura Rennie Interiors has been quite the adventure. I’d like to thank a few people in particular who contributed their time and effort into helping me get started. My sister-in-law Sky (Needles&Mouse) turned my vision for my logo into a reality and I am head over heels in love with it. My college roommate and dear friend Amy (Sincerely Amy Designs) contributed her gorgeous lettering, making my logo a precious labor of love from two people I care deeply about. I had the privilege of getting an inside look at Amy’s business when she first started out, and I’ve been blessed to receive her insights and advice as I follow in her footsteps. Jenny (Be Thou My Vision Photography) has been integral to my sanity and to the success of this website. We started designing our sites at the same time and our late-night Squarespace and CSS discussions provided me with valuable feedback and, best of all, comfort in knowing I wasn’t alone! Jenny also took all of the photographs of me you see on this site. She is a rock star!
Cheers to my husband, Andy, who is hands-down my most attractive supporter. He knows just what I need when I start to get over-stressed. (Dance party, wine, chocolate and snuggles!) I love you, babe.
I also want to thank you! Thank you for joining me on this crazy journey. My goal for this business is to create lovely spaces where community thrives and vulnerability is celebrated. I don’t care if your dishes aren’t done or you’re wearing your high school P.E. shirt. I want you to feel comfortable here in my little spot on the Internet! I hope you feel inspired and encouraged after each visit. Stay as long as you like, and don’t forget to enter the giveaway!
Since two of my favorite things are coffee and decorating, two people will receive a $10 Starbucks card and a free “design question” service. The giveaway runs through the weekend, so you have plenty of time to enter and gain extra entries! The winners will be announced Monday morning on the blog and social media. Good luck, and thanks for entering!
